There are dodgy businesses everywhere and the cleaning world seems to be a magnet for unethical businesses. Business owners that will hire people, treat them poorly, underpay them and give little or no training. Fair Work have stated that the cleaning industry is a priority for them. They’re looking at businesses not providing fair work conditions for their staff.
Found Guilty of Exploiting Workers
Recently a commercial cleaning company in Brisbane was found guilty of exploiting its staff. The Fair Work Ombudsman initiated legal action against the owner of BrisClean. He was fined almost $130,000 for exploiting migrant workers and ordered to pay an extra $60,000 to the workers. BrisClean was put in the hands of administrators in 2015 but is believed to have recommenced trading in Brisbane under a new business name.
Who is cleaning your building?
Are they professional commercial cleaners?
Do they treat their employees fairly?
Or are they migrant workers being exploited?
Migrant or minority workers can be trapped in this world. They’re frightened to speak up as they need their job, they need the income to be able to live. It’s up to all businesses to help free them from this and eradicate chances of exploitation.
Migrant or minority workers need support to help stamp out this exploitation. It’s up to every business in Australia to find out who’s supplying their services. Make sure that your contractors are professional legitimate companies.
It’s important to point out that businesses exploiting workers are in the minority. Most businesses want to do the right thing by their employees.
