Test and Tag is the process of checking the safety of portable electrical appliances. It is a particularly importance maintenance task peformed in any work as testing and tagging ensures the safety of the people in your office or workplace, while also minimising the risk of an electrical hazard. It typically involves a two step process:
- visually inspecting the appliance for any damage
- electrically testing it with a Portable Appliance Tester.
Once tested, the item is placed with a tag to confirm that it has been tested, as well as who tested it, the test date and when the next test is due.
The AS/NZS 3760 is the Australian Standard that provides guidelines and regulations for the test and tag industry with regards to electrical safety of appliances. It sets out recommendations to issues such as test and tag intervals, defines who can test and tag and general guidelines.

So do you need to test and tag your business premises?
There are some industries which are required to have their appliances tested and tagged regularly throughout the year due to the harsh nature of the industry which is likely to damage equipment at a faster rate, such as construction and mining and you guessed it commercial cleaners.
Outside of these industries however knowing whether your business needs to be test and tagged is simple. Do you employ staff? If the answer is yes then you have an obligation to satisfy the minimum checks outlined in the Work Health and Safety Regulations and the Electrical Code of Practice and these checks need to be carried out by a certified technician and meet the AS/NZS 3760-2010 Standards.
